An intervention is an organized effort by significant others to
break through the denial, rationalization, and projection of the
person with the behavior issues. The intervention process is collective
effort usually guided by a professional counselor.
The immediate goal is to get the person to agree to seek professional
help. The long-term goal is to relieve the discomfort of the person
and significant others resulting from their self-destructive behaviors.
Depending on the circumstances, the intervention process can vary.
At times, a single session with the affected person and concerned
individuals is sufficient. Other situations may require some preliminary
education and preparation by the counselor with the family and
significant others to prepare for the intervention. In such cases,
the process may take require multiple sessions.
Generally, the Intervention process is conducted in a neutral,
professional setting. Occasionally, circumstances may require
the intervention to be held at home or workplace.
